Koala: The Icon of Australia’s Eucalyptus Forests

The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is one of Australia’s most beloved marsupials, known for its fluffy ears, round nose, and relaxed demeanor. Contrary to popular belief, koalas are not bears but marsupials that carry their young, called joeys, in a pouch.

Koalas are highly specialized herbivores, feeding almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves, which are low in nutrients and high in toxins. To conserve energy, koalas sleep up to 18-20 hours a day. Their strong claws and opposable digits help them climb trees with ease.

Despite their iconic status, koalas face serious threats from habitat destruction, bushfires, and disease. Conservation efforts are focused on habitat restoration and disease management to ensure the survival of these unique creatures.

The deserts and steppes of the world are home to some of the most resilient creatures on Earth. These arid landscapes, often viewed as barren, are rich with life uniquely adapted to thrive in extreme temperatures, scarce water, and minimal vegetation. Explore the wonders of these ecosystems and discover the hidden beauty of their inhabitants.
